Ref: Health and Safety Guidance Notes HSG107

The Health and Safety Executive advise competence at two levels (Guidance Notes HSG107)

    49) Combined inspection and testing requires a greater degree of competence (in terms of knowledge, training and experience) than for inspection alone, because appropriate electrical knowledge is needed to undertake the tests and interpret the test results. However, it can often be carried out by a competent employee.

    50) People testing portable electrical equipment should be appropriately trained.

It is the employer’s duty to make sure that they are competent for the work they are to carry out.

Level 1: requires no interpretation of results and limited to simple Pass/fail test instrument. (Simple Pass/fail instruments may fail some appliances unnecessarily where higher earth readings are present by design or mains filtered)

Level 2: requires the user to have the ability 'competence' to interpret test results by using a machine that displays individual results.

We provide sufficient, accredited training at Level 2 so that a Duty Holder is able to make informed decisions on frequencies for inspecting and testing their workplace electrical appliances in accordance with HSE Guidance and the IET Code of Practice for In-service Inspection and Testing of Electrical Equipment.
