Remember:

Approximately 90% of dangers are picked up during a formal visual inspection carried out by a suitably trained person and can be skipped by companies that only offer pat testing.

Pat testing is extremely useful to help identify electrical faults such as earth faults, insulation breakdown and leakage current but it is essential that the 'formal' inspection is carried out prior to any electrical testing and that the person carrying out such testing is able to interpret the test results properly and that the appropriate tests are being performed.

Unbelievably there is no standard to pat testing only guidance which is set out by the Health and Safety Executive (Guidance Notes hsg107) as an example and the IET Code of Practice for in-service inspection and testing of electrical equipment. Contrary to advice given by some other Pat testing companies there are NO regulations which is why there are so many pat testing courses available on the internet and DVD's that are almost impossible to fail and offer absolutely no practical evidence that the person sitting them can even wire a plug.

Frequencies of inspection should be determined by the duty holder and not the pat testing company and should take account of environment, User checks, formal Inspections and previous electrical testing results, that is why detailed inspection/test results are useful.

If you see a company offering cheap pat testing please make sure they are not just placing a label on your appliances, they should disconnect, open every plug top where possible (not molded) and check every fuse for correct rating for the flex and to make sure that they conform to BS1362 before beginning any electrical testing and then of course provide you with a risk assessment containing the individual results so that you can make an informed decision on your frequency of testing and that it corresponds with you insurance and accreditation requirements.
